According to the National Center for Education Statistics, almost 1 in 5 students ages 12-18 reported being bullied during the school year in 2019. While we all want to see our children thrive in safe and inclusive learning environments, the unfortunate reality is that bullying is a serious and pervasive issue that affects many young people. It can cause a great deal of harm and distress, leading to severe emotional and psychological scars that can last a lifetime.

National Bullying Prevention Month is an annual event to prevent childhood bullying and promote kindness, acceptance, and inclusion. In honor of this important month, we’ll discuss essential steps both parents and students can take to fight bullying in K-12 and promote a culture of kindness, respect, and acceptance.

  • Start with Education: The first step to fighting bullying is education. As a parent, you can teach your children about the different types of bullying, why it’s harmful, and how to identify it. Teach them how to spot bullying behavior, whether it manifests as verbal, physical, relational, or cyberbullying. With proper education, children can better understand this issue and become empowered to stand up against bullying. Parents can also work with schools to organize workshops, activities, and events that encourage students to speak out against bullying. Raising awareness and education about the issue can contribute to an atmosphere where children can safely disclose incidents of bullying.
  • Encourage Open Communication: Encouraging open dialogue between students, teachers, and parents is essential in preventing and tackling bullying. Children should feel comfortable talking to their classmates, teachers, or parents when they experience bullying. This begins with fostering an atmosphere of trust and support within the school environment. When students are confident that they can openly discuss incidents of bullying they are more likely to seek assistance and share their concerns.
  • Explore Resources: there are many resources for parents and students to explore in their bullying prevention efforts. For example, our sister company, K12, recently launched a Bullying Prevention Resource Hub that provides tools on bullying prevention, practices in kindness, and strategies for protecting mental health. Content also includes videos, quizzes, fact sheets, and more for students of all ages, resource guides for teachers and parents, live and recorded web events, and more.
  • Foster Empathy and Respect: One of the best ways to combat bullying is to cultivate empathy and respect amongst students. Parents and educators can model respectful and empathic behavior, which can teach children to follow suit. Schools can encourage teamwork and collaboration between students and create a positive and nurturing learning environment. By modeling, teaching, and creating environments that prioritize respect and support, we not only prevent bullying but also nurture a generation of empathetic and respectful individuals who will contribute positively to our society.
  • Teach Problem-Solving and Conflict Resolution Skills: teach students how to solve problems and resolve conflicts without any aggression. By teaching children conflict resolution and problem-solving skills, they can manage conflicts peacefully and without resorting to bullying. This can ultimately lead to more constructive conversations and positive relationships between students.
  • Take Action: If you have experienced or witnessed bullying, it’s essential to take immediate action and intervene. By working quickly, you can help protect victims, halt escalations, and send a clear message that bullying won’t be tolerated at any level. Take a moment to evaluate the situation and find the best course of action. Typically, gaining details from speaking with your child is a good first step. Then, discuss the bullying with a teacher or member of the school administration. Remember, bullying is a serious issue that requires urgent attention. The sooner you take action, the better you can stop the situation from escalating.

Fighting bullying in elementary, middle, and high school requires a collaborative effort between parents, educators, and students. With so many students impacted by bullying on a daily basis, it is important that we work with one another to solve this issue. Together we can create a safe and inclusive learning environment that promotes kindness and respect.

*This October, Stride Tutoring is proud to support National Bullying Prevention Month with a special initiative. For every new 60-minute tutoring session booked and completed in October, Stride will contribute $10 to Rachel’s Challenge, a nonprofit organization dedicated to creating positive school cultures.*

We live in an era of digital transformation, with every aspect of our lives intertwining with technology — and education is no exception. The pandemic certainly accelerated this shift, but the move toward online learning was already in motion. If your child needs tutoring, you must have wondered, “Is online tutoring as good as in-person tutoring?” In most cases, online tutoring is as effective as in-person tutoring, but it depends on the child’s learning style, personal strengths, and specific needs.

In-Person Tutoring: Pros and Cons

In-person tutoring provides a dynamic and engaging learning environment. Whether it’s a math tutor illustrating complex problems, an English tutor dissecting Shakespearean verses, or a science tutor explaining chemical reactions, direct interaction can enhance understanding and retention. In-person tutoring is invaluable for learning hands-on activities.

But this type of private tutoring also has drawbacks. The need for physical presence can lead to scheduling constraints and logistical challenges. You can only work with a tutor local to you, giving you far fewer qualified choices. As a result, the pool of available local tutors often has lower levels of experience and credentials. Parents sometimes have safety concerns with 1-on-1 tutoring. Additionally, in-person tutoring typically costs more since you must pay for the tutor’s travel time.

Online Tutoring: Pros and Cons

Online tutoring offers unprecedented flexibility. With this option, your child can study trigonometry with a math tutor, delve into classic literature with an English tutor, or decode biology concepts with a science tutor — all from the convenience and security of your living room. You can choose from highly qualified private tutoring professionals nationwide, with far easier scheduling. Neither you nor the tutor spends time stuck in traffic, and you won’t have to pay for travel time.

Despite the many benefits of online tutoring, there are challenges. A stable internet connection is an absolute must. It is easier for students to become distracted during online tutoring, though there are strategies to help limit distractions. Some students still prefer face-to-face interaction, although they are far more comfortable with on-screen interactions than any previous generation.

Personality, Learning Types, and Adaptability

“Is online tutoring as good as in-person tutoring?” The answer is an unqualified yes in terms of convenience, economics, security, and quality of the tutors. One-on-one tutoring online is often better than in-person tutoring on these scores. However, the needs of your specific child are paramount.

The most effective tutoring method depends on the student’s personality, learning style, and adaptability. A hands-on learner might flourish with in-person tutoring. In contrast, an auditory or visual learner may benefit more from online sessions. Similarly, an adaptable and tech-savvy student might embrace online learning, whereas a student who thrives on personal interaction might prefer in-person tutoring.

The Future of Learning

The future of learning is progressively gravitating toward online platforms, allowing students worldwide access to quality education. The question, “Is online tutoring as good as in-person tutoring?” is becoming less relevant as technology and teaching methods advance. Private tutoring, especially 1-on-1 tutoring, is no longer bound by geographical constraints or available only to those with significant monetary means. In many ways, online tutoring is democratizing education, offering unprecedented opportunities for learning to all.

Supporting Your Child’s Academic Journey

Whether in-person or online, private 1-on-1 tutoring empowers students to reach their academic potential. Determining the best approach depends on your child’s individual needs and circumstances. As we journey into the digital age, remember that both paths lead to a promising future of enriched learning opportunities.

Find out what makes Stride Tutoring the best online tutoring platform. All our private tutoring is conducted online by state-certified teachers.

“Does my child need tutoring?” This is a question many parents ask when it comes to their child’s academics. You want to support your child’s learning without creating unreasonable pressure. Do they need more help? Identifying signs of academic struggle early can significantly impact your child’s education. Let’s decode your child’s academic performance so you can decide when academic tutoring is in your child’s best interest.

Recognizing the Signs: Does My Child Need Tutoring?

If you’re asking this question, you’re likely seeing some signs that your student is struggling. But school is supposed to be challenging, right? So how do you know how much effort is appropriate, and when does it become a sign they need help? Here are some key questions to consider:

  • Is my child regularly struggling with homework? If homework has become an enduring battle, it might be a sign they’re not grasping the subject matter. Academic tutoring helps reinforce class material and enhances comprehension and confidence.
  • Are my child’s grades slipping below state academic standards? A consistent slide or sudden dip in grades points to academic issues. Tutors can help identify gaps in understanding and work to fill them. If you need help identifying educational resources in your state, visit the U.S. Department of Education.
  • Does my child have a negative attitude toward school or specific subjects? If your child has developed a negative attitude, it could mean they are struggling. Tutoring can help rekindle their interest by making the subject more accessible.
  • Is my child easily frustrated or defeated when working on school tasks? This can be a signal they’re finding the work too challenging. Academic tutoring can provide coping strategies and targeted learning support.
  • Does my child avoid discussing school or become secretive about schoolwork? Avoidance may indicate a serious problem. A tutor can provide a safe space for addressing academic concerns.

Answering “yes” to any of these questions suggests your child could benefit from the extra academic support a tutor provides.

Connecting With Teachers

“Does my child need tutoring?” is a big question, but it’s not one you have to answer alone. Consult your child’s teachers and seek their input. They can provide essential feedback about your child’s academic performance and behavior in class. They can help you gain a holistic view of your child’s educational experience. Their insights can help identify when extra support, like academic tutoring, is needed.

Analyzing Grades and Progress Reports

Grades and progress reports offer clear benchmarks for your child’s academic performance. While they don’t provide the full picture, a persistent decline or sudden drop in grades could signal that your child needs additional academic support. Academic tutoring can alleviate the potential stress and weight of your expectations on your child. More importantly, a tutor can empower them to overcome their academic challenges and regain confidence in their abilities to succeed.

What Can a Tutor Do?

A tutor is more than just an additional teacher; they’re a personal ally in your child’s academic journey. Don’t be concerned if the answer to “Does my child need tutoring?” is a yes. Needing academic tutoring is not a reflection of your child’s abilities or your parenting.

A tutor can provide targeted assistance, helping your child better understand challenging subjects and regain confidence. If homework has become a battlefield, a tutor can break down complex tasks into manageable steps. Slipping grades can be addressed by reinforcing the basics and filling learning gaps. For students feeling overwhelmed or defeated, tutors provide strategies for stress management and help them tackle academic tasks with renewed vigor. By offering a safe and encouraging environment, academic tutoring can transform negative attitudes and avoidance into active engagement in learning.

Asking, “Does my child need tutoring?” is an important step in supporting your child’s academic journey. Remember, seeking help isn’t a sign of failure but an investment in your child’s future. Stride Tutoring is here to partner with you in this journey. We provide tailored online tutoring services with state-certified teachers that cater to your child’s unique learning needs, paving the way for academic success.

Whether your child is struggling with a few specific subjects or you simply want to give them an edge, there are many benefits of web tutoring. In recent years, web tutoring has become increasingly popular due to its flexibility, convenience, and affordability. Not only does it help students master difficult concepts and stay on track with their studies, but it can also boost their academic achievements. Here are the top seven benefits of web tutoring that can help your child succeed.

  1. Personalized Attention: One of the most significant advantages of web tutoring is the provision of personalized attention to each student. In a traditional classroom setting, it can be challenging for teachers to address the individual needs of every student due to time constraints, class size, and varying learning paces. However, web tutoring eliminates these limitations by offering one-on-one sessions that are specifically tailored to the student’s personal needs. With no distractions or interruptions, students can ask questions, receive feedback, and learn at their own pace. Tutors can cater their materials and lesson plans to each student, and tailor their teaching style to suit their specific strengths and weaknesses.
  2. Convenience and Flexibility: web tutoring allows students to work from the comfort of their own home, which means parents no longer need to drive to appointments or worry about traffic. This is especially beneficial for families with busy schedules, as online sessions can be scheduled at a time that works best for them. Booking can be done very quickly with a few clicks and in a matter of minutes. Plus, web tutoring provides access to a national network of qualified tutors from all over the United States. With the elimination of geographical constraints, this means students can be matched with the best tutors suited to their needs.
  3. Access to Resources: web tutoring platforms often provide students with access to a wealth of educational resources, such as video tutorials, study guides, interactive content, and practice quizzes. These resources can supplement their in-class learning and help them solidify their understanding of complex concepts.
  4. Safety: web tutoring eliminates many of the risks of in-person tutoring, such as exposure to colds or other infectious agents, inappropriate tutor behavior, and other stranger dangers. This can be very reassuring for both the parent and student and lead to more focused learning. Credible web tutoring platforms implement strict privacy and security measures to prevent cyber risks like hacking and data breaches. In today’s digital age, Stride believes that ensuring the safety and security of children in online learning environments is of paramount importance.
  5. Improved Motivation: One of the remarkable benefits of web tutoring is its ability to improve student motivation and enthusiasm for learning. Web-based tutors have the flexibility to employ creative teaching methods and tools that make learning engaging and enjoyable. Being in a digital format is also very natural for today’s youth, which can be further motivating. Tutors often can help spark excitement for a subject or topic by using creative teaching methods and tools and creating positive rapport with their students. Additionally, the positive reinforcement from web-based tutors can boost a student’s confidence, leading to more motivation and enthusiasm for learning.
  6. Enhanced Communication Skills: web tutoring gives students the opportunity to practice their communication skills with their tutor. Since all communication is done virtually, students can improve their written and verbal communication skills while interacting with someone who is not a family member or a classmate. This allows them to experience diverse perspectives and gain exposure to different communication styles and approaches in a medium they’ll likely utilize the rest of their lives.
  7. Cost-Effectiveness: web tutoring is often a more affordable option compared to traditional tutoring. By opting for web tutoring, you can save on costs associated with traditional tutoring services while still receiving high-quality educational support. Traditional tutoring often involves overhead costs such as transportation expenses, facility rentals, and administrative fees, which get passed on to the customer. However, with web tutoring, most of these additional expenses are eliminated, allowing you to allocate your budget more efficiently towards the core tutoring service. There are no hidden fees or expenses involved, and sessions can be booked at a lower rate with tutors from around the United States. Additionally, web tutoring is typically a pay-as-you-go system, which means there are no minimum hours required. Learn more about Stride’s pricing.

Web tutoring has emerged as a transformative educational approach that offers numerous advantages for students striving for academic success. Whether it’s personalized attention, convenience, access to resources, cyber safety, motivation, communication skills, or cost savings, web tutoring offers a solution that is flexible, learner-centered and effective. With the right web tutoring platform, your child can catch up, build confidence, and develop good study habits. Find your tutor and start reaping the benefits of web tutoring today!

The Power of Tutoring for Special Education Students https://stridetutoring.com/articles/special-education-tutoring/ Wed, 10 May 2023 15:40:22 +0000 https://devtutoring.wpengine.com/?p=1 The post The Power of Tutoring for Special Education Students appeared first on Stride Tutoring.

Special education tutoring offers invaluable support for students with individual learning needs. Being a parent to a child with special needs comes with unique challenges: from finding the right school to creating an individualized education plan (IEP) to considering different therapy options, there are many responsibilities that require your attention. However, one resource that can significantly enhance your child’s learning experience is tutoring. In this blog post, we will discuss the importance of tutoring for special education students and why it should be considered as a valuable support system for your child.

Personalized Learning Experience

Special education students thrive in personalized learning environments that cater to their specific needs and learning styles. One of the key advantages of special education tutoring is the ability of tutors to adapt their teaching methods and materials specifically to match your child’s individual requirements. Unlike a traditional classroom setting, where teachers have to address the needs of multiple students simultaneously, tutors can provide focused attention and personalized instruction that is tailored to your child’s specific strengths, weaknesses, and learning preferences. This customized pacing allows students to progress at a pace that suits them best. This type of tailored approach is particularly beneficial for students with IEPs, as it ensures that they receive the individualized instruction they need to thrive academically.

Improved Academic Performance

Tutoring plays a pivotal role in improving the academic performance of special education students. By providing additional time and attention, tutors help students fully comprehend challenging topics. The one-on-one interaction enables students to ask questions, seek clarifications, and gain a deeper understanding of subjects, which can be beneficial especially for students who struggle with processing information. Tutors can reinforce lessons, fill knowledge gaps, and help students develop study skills and strategies that align with their learning style.

Enhanced Self-confidence

Many special education students struggle with self-confidence due to their unique challenges and concerns about falling behind their peers. Tutoring offers a safe and supportive environment where students can ask questions, make mistakes, and grow without fear of judgment. The encouragement and guidance provided by tutors foster a sense of self-assurance, empowering students to tackle academic obstacles with resilience and a positive mindset. Increased self-confidence not only benefits academic performance but also contributes to overall personal development and well-being.

Support in Coping with Emotional and Behavioral Issues

Tutors play a vital role in supporting students who face emotional and behavioral challenges. Special education students may encounter difficulties with social skills, organization, anxiety, or other factors that affect their academic progress. Tutors offer guidance, patience, and understanding to help students navigate these issues; encouraging them when they’re feeling low and praising them when they make progress. This recognition not only boosts students’ self-esteem but also reinforces their belief in their own abilities and potential. By consistently acknowledging and celebrating their achievements, tutors help students develop a positive self-image and foster a growth mindset.

Tutors also play a crucial role in helping students develop social skills and improve their interpersonal interactions. They provide opportunities for students to practice and refine their social abilities in a safe and supportive setting through activities such as role-playing or presentations. By addressing social skills development within the context of tutoring sessions, tutors help students enhance their social competence and feel more confident in social situations.

Partnership with Teachers and Parents

Tutors serve as valuable partners for both classroom teachers and parents. They collaborate closely with parents to gain insights into student academic performance, identify areas of improvement, and develop strategies for targeted instruction. This collaboration ensures a cohesive approach to your child’s education, aligning tutoring sessions with classroom goals and objectives. By working together, tutors, teachers, and parents can develop a shared understanding of your child’s unique needs and provide the necessary support for their educational journey, including more effective recommendations for modifications to their IEP, if necessary.

Tutoring holds immense value in supporting special education students on their educational journey. By opting into tutoring, you are providing your child with personalized instruction and targeted support tailored to their individual needs. The satisfaction of knowing that your child is receiving the attention and resources they require to overcome academic challenges is invaluable. We hope this blog post has shed light on the importance of tutoring and encourages you to consider it as a beneficial resource for your child’s special education experience.
